The Forge, Hinton St Mary

Katie Scorgie paints equestrian scenes, hounds and dogs, portraits and landscapes from her studio at The Forge in Hinton St Mary, near Sturminster Newton in North Dorset.

I have an understanding of horses learned through being around them since I was young and therefore am able to convey how they feel, move and look.

I love being outside, painting and drawing plein air, working quickly, capturing a moment, the light.

Country Life

Katie was featured in Lives and souls of Dorset by Arabella Youens, in the magazine’s Deepest Dorset issue. The article notes that her oil Huntsman and Hounds in the Snow was commissioned for the Countryside Alliance’s Christmas card, and that she has followed and painted most of the packs in the county, including the South Dorset, Portman and Blackmore & Sparkford Vale.

‘It’s a privilege to live and work in Dorset, we’re very lucky. There’s a proper community here.’

The Household Cavalry

In 2011 Lt-Col Dan Hughes invited Katie and two other artists to paint the Life Guards and the Blues & Royals, behind the scenes and on parade. For a year she had free access to Hyde Park Barracks and was present at the regiment’s major events, including the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

The paintings were shown in Best of British, with Daniel Crane and Tom Hoar, at Hyde Park Barracks, Knightsbridge, 23 to 26 April 2012, in aid of the Household Cavalry Foundation.

From saddle to studio, a profile by John Newth, follows Katie from point-to-point rider to independent artist, and visits her home and studio in the former blacksmith’s forge at Hinton St Mary.

‘If you work from life, there’s a real fluidity, and the more you do it, the more accomplished it becomes.’

Katie has also exhibited at Dukes, Dorchester, and during Dorset Art Weeks. Round Bales was a finalist in the Russell-Cotes exhibition, 2023.
